Former governor, Charles “Buddy Roemer, III, at the annual College Republicans banquet on Tuesday, challenged Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco to “pick up the phone, call President Bush and ask him for new levees.Roemer, having just returned from a visit to New Orleans, addressed many issues left in Hurricane Katrina’s wake. He proposed that new levees be built around the city to last for 500 years. Roemer said that the governor should call the president every day and politely ask “where are Louisiana’s levees?Roemer introduced many other ideas to rebuild New Orleans. He proposed that Louisiana let people move back into New Orleans only if they have a secure job. In return for a secure job, Roemer proposes that the government build the residents new homes. He also said that the state should waive its income tax for people over 65 years old to help make Louisiana an attractive place to retire.Roemer talked about plans to make New Orleans the world’s first fully Wi-fi city, giving residents and visitors wireless Internet access virtually anywhere in the city. He hopes that Microsoft and Google will help fund the project, claiming that it will attract young people to New Orleans.About rebuilding the city and state, Roemer said, “We’ve got to do it ourselves, and not just depend on the government.Roemer is a native of Bossier City, La. He attended Harvard and a Congressman for most of the 1980s. He was governor of Louisiana from 1988 until 1992.
