The President Consults Senators, Gets Closer To Naming Next Supreme Court Nominee.

President Bush is expected to make the final decision on his next nomination to the Supreme Court as early as today, according to White House press secretary Scott McClellan. The President has consulted nearly 70 Senators on the matter, including 17 of the 18 on the Judiciary Committee, reports the Washington Post today.

“We have been listening to the views and ideas of members of the Senate, and the president will take those into account as he makes a decision about who should fill that vacancy,” said McClellan.

In his speech, Roberts says that he wishes to carry on what Chief Justice Rehnquist passed on to him.

All Republicans voted ‘I’, 23 Democrats voted ‘I’.

Mary Landrieu votes yes to Roberts.

Among those voting nay were Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Tom Harken, D-Iowa. Sen. John Kerry, D.

Only person from the gang of 14 voting against Sen Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii.

Only John Marshall at age 45 was younger than Roberts will be as the Chief Justice.

Frist said Roberts was well qualified and deserving of the position:

[Roberts] is the brightest of the bright.

The AP reports this morning that John Roberts is assured “a comfortable, bipartisan Senate confirmation as the nation’s chief justice.â€?

Roberts has received substantial bipartisan support throughout the confirmation process, winning the respect of Senators from both parties. The AP goes on to report “21 Senate Democrats agreed he has ‘a brilliant legal mind’ and will be among the 76 senators — more than three-fourths of the 100-member Senate — who say they will vote today to confirm Roberts as the successor to the late William H. Rehnquist.â€?

The Union Program Council’s Perspective Speaker Series will hold a pornography debate tonight.

The debate will be at 7PM in the Union Theatre featuring Ron Jeremy, prolific porn star, and Michael, Leahy, anti-porn crusader. The event will be free.

The College Republicans along with Student Government at LSU held a 9-11 memorial service today at LSU. Three thousand flags were set out on the parade grounds in remembrance of those who lost their lives. This picture captures the 3000 flags, the memorial bell tower (where the actual ceremony was held) and the flagpole that holds strong on the LSU parade ground.
